Users reports of installing ACPI on various machines. See also Fixed Dsdts.
Linux Distributions
Suse 8.1:
Mandrake 9.1:
- Stock kernel in this distribution is build with ACPI
- ACPI not enabled by default. Lilo uses option acpi=off. Change or remove option in /etc/lilo.conf to enable acpi.
Gentoo Linux
- Gentoo's customized kernel patchset (gentoo-sources) and development patchset (pfeifer-sources) both apply recent ACPI4Linux patches to the kernel
- ACPI support in those kernels is dependent upon user configuration. There is no default kernel configuration for Gentoo's kernels
- LiveCD kernel sources (gs-sources) also have recent ACPI4L patches. The LiveCD includes full ACPI and APM support, however if APM is supported, it is taken in preference above ACPI. There is an option to manually choose ACPI over APM

IBM Thinkpad 570 (with Suse 8.1)
Unfortunately the experience is negative. Boot messages seem to indicate that ACPI is being initialised fine but power management support is always reported as unavailable in the KDE control panels. Even after setting acpi=force in the boot settings (just to make sure) the situation persists.
Addendum: You need to upgrade the 570 BIOS to support ACPI. Instructions are available on IBM's web site, search for "thinkpad 570 BIOS update". (Disclaimer: I did the BIOS update from windoze. I have this working with FreeBSD 4.8-stable and KDE 3.x but have not tried a Linux distro. Should not matter.)
